Adelphi Teaching Fellows Call for Proposals

News, Announcement

The Faculty Center for Professional Excellence (FCPE) is pleased to invite proposals from faculty who wish to join a yearlong Teaching Fellows cohort. The purpose of the program is to provide support, resources and community for Fellows to expand their expertise in teaching as they develop a “Teaching as Research” project or engage in an intensive evidence-based course development process. Fellows will also share their growing expertise with colleagues at the departmental, school/college, and campus levels to contribute to a culture of teaching excellence at Adelphi University.

Selected Fellows will receive 3 credits of release from teaching in the Spring 2018 semester, and a $1,500 grant to be used specifically for the implementation of the Fellow’s teaching project. Each Fellow will be paired with an FCPE staff member who can provide assistance throughout the process.

The program is open to:

  • Full-time faculty: tenure-track and tenured, clinical and lecturers.
  • With at least two full semesters of teaching experience at Adelphi
  • Who are promising, committed teachers
  • Who have endorsement and support from their department

Six Fellows will be selected: four from a group that includes pre-tenure faculty, clinical assistant professors and lecturers, and two from a group that includes tenured faculty, clinical associate professors and senior lecturers.

During the 2017–18 academic year, Fellows will:

  • Attend a welcome dinner for Fellows in the early fall of 2017 and culminating dinner in late spring of 2018.
  • Attend four 2-hour lunchtime cohort seminars with readings, assignments and some special guest facilitators during both the fall and spring semesters (8 meetings total).
  • Complete four online modules each semester, focusing on evidence-based teaching practices and effective course design.
  • Participate in Peer Teaching Observations for formative feedback only and to assist in the development of a peer observation culture at Adelphi (not related to the tenure or promotion process).
  • Assemble a portfolio of artifacts and reflections from the work done in the seminars and online modules.
  • Participate in a three-day intensive workshop during the January intersession.
  • Design or substantially redesign a course based on principles of backward design, universal design and current research on teaching effectiveness and course design. Possibilities include but are not limited to: redesigning a course for a new modality such as blended or fully online, redesigning a course based on principles of Inclusive Teaching, integration or application of innovative pedagogical practices and/or practices from another discipline such as POGIL or a “studio” model, creating a service learning course, a flipped course, a project-based course, a new FYE course or a course designed around key disciplinary questions.
  • Alternatively, develop a Teaching as Research project or pilot that involves the application of a process of inquiry to investigate a teaching related question or problem, and the collection and analysis of data/evidence with the goal of improving student learning outcomes. Proposals should include a research question or hypothesis, a preliminary lit review that includes citations for a minimum of three articles related to your investigation and a brief summary of those findings and a description of the goals of your investigation and the course or courses where you will implement your investigation.
  • Participate in evaluation activities to assess the effectiveness of the Teaching Program
  • Offer a workshop or other interactive session, based on their fellowship work, as part of the Fall 2018 Adelphi Teaching and Learning Conference.

Completed application packages are due by midnight on June 2, 2017.

Applicants should submit the following:

1) A brief letter from your department chair that includes:

  • A statement of support for your involvement in the program.
  • Willingness to accommodate your 3 credits of release time in Spring 2018, if you are selected.
  • A statement about how your proposed fellowship project fits in with the larger goals and vision of the department and how they see your work as a Fellow benefitting the department as a whole.
