Emerging Adulthood: The Cultural Psychology of a New Stage of Development
Dr. Arnett has explored the demographic and cultural patterns associated with this stage, nationally and internationally. In 2012, he directed his first national survey of emerging adulthood and will share his new insights on this group’s relationships with parent, plans for education and work, romantic attachment and uses of social media.

Emerging Adulthood: A new stage of development |
Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, Ph.D. is a researcher and professor at Clark University. Dr. Arnett is the originator of the term “emerging adulthood.” Jeffrey Jensen Arnett received his Ph.D from the University of Virginia, and did three years of postdoctoral work at the University of Chicago. From 1992-1998 he was Associate Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of Missouri. He has been a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University and the University of Maryland.
He has published numerous articles on emerging adulthood and is the author of the book Emerging Adulthood: The Winding Road from the Late Teens through the Twenties (2004, Oxford University Press). In addition, he is the author of the textbook Adolescence and Emerging Adulthood: A Cultural Approach (2004, Prentice Hall). He is the editor of Journal of Adolescent Research and of three forthcoming encyclopedias, the Routledge International Encyclopedia of Adolescence (four volumes), the Encyclopedia of Children, Adolescents, and the Media (Sage, two volumes), and the Encyclopedia of Emerging Adulthood (Greenwood, one volume). His other scholarly interests include the psychology of globalization.
