Adelphi is committed to keeping the campus community updated on the impact of Hurricane Sandy, and has gathered the following FAQs regarding academic changes and general University operations. We will continue to update this page as we receive additional questions through our Facebook page:

Academic

Q. Will the semester be extended?

A. There is no current plan to extend the semester. Our academic plan makes use of emergency days and study days.

Q. Will finals dates change?

A. Finals scheduled for Sat. Dec. 15 through Weds. Dec. 19 will take place as originally scheduled. Finals originally scheduled on Thurs. Dec. 13 and Fri. Dec. 14 will now take place on Thurs. Dec. 20 and Fri. Dec. 21, respectively, to accommodate class makeup days. Please click here for the full updated academic calendar for Fall 2012.

Q. What will happen with field placement requirements?

A. Requirements for completion of field placements will be conveyed by unit.  The general rule is that students will follow the calendar of the organization they are placed in.  Most schools have been closed for this week – most hospitals have not, etc. Students can receive information on field placement expectations through their Adelphi placement office or through the Office of the Dean for their school.

Q. What happens if I cannot get to campus when it re-opens on Monday?

A. Students who have trouble traveling in should let their professors know and they will be given the opportunity to make up the work.  Professors who cannot make it in should alert their Dean, arrange for a substitute if possible and appropriate, and alert their class by Moodle or other means if there are cancellations or changes.  As is the case with religious observances or illnesses, the best plan for students is open communication with their professor, and the best course for professors  is a plan to make up the classes which is shared with their Chairs and Deans.

Q. Do I have the option of taking classes at an off-campus center if it is easier for me to get there instead of Garden City?

A. No, students should continue their current program.

Q. Will you be adjusting admissions application deadlines?

A. There are no imminent deadlines for Adelphi admissions, but if a student has a particular concern or circumstance, they can reach out to Admissions at 516.877.3050 or e – admissions@adelphi.edu next week. As a reminder, the Graduate Open House scheduled for Sunday November 4th has been postposed and will be rescheduled.

General

Q. Is drinking water safe on campus?

A. The water is safe on campus and filtered water stations are available as is bottled water in the University Center

Q. My child is still on campus–how will I know if he/she is ok?

A. All students are safe and secure.  The University is fully powered and cell service is working.  In addition, University email is fully operational.  Should you have an emergency please call 516-877-3511. In addition, Health Services has been, and will continue to be, operational 24 hours a day.

Q. How are students on campus getting food?

A. Meals were hand delivered to the residence halls by public safety offices and additional staff throughout the storm.  Adelphi Dining Services is fully stocked and has been receiving deliveries.  The University Center has its own dedicated generator that supported operations while the Campus was without power but, power has been fully restored to all buildings and generators are no longer needed.

Q. I can’t reach my child. What should I do?

A. The University is fully powered and cell service is working.  In addition, University email is fully operational.  Should you have an emergency please call 516.877.3511.

Q. Does the University need any donations of food or supplies? If so, how can I send them to you?

A. Thank you for your kind offer but we are not in need of supplies of any kind.  There will be many calls for supplies by relief agencies in the coming days. The Adelphi community has stepped up to meet those needs in the past and we anticipate engaging in those efforts when called upon.  In the meantime you can support the blood drive.

We will be hosting an emergency blood drive on campus on Saturday, November 3 in cooperation with Long Island Blood Services, a division of the New York Blood Center, in light of the extreme shortfall of blood at this time.  The drive is open to the community and will be held in the Thomas Dixon Lovely Ballrooms of the Ruth S. Harley University Center from 9:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Q. I would like to visit campus to check on my child.

A. If safe to travel, families can come to campus and check on their child or considering collecting them as we will be closed for a few more days, but please be assured, they are safe and comfortable here on campus.  If a student does choose to leave campus, he or she must advise their RA and RHD as we want to be sure we are aware of the status of all residential students.

Q. Will the University be assisting students who need to use public transportation to get to campus?

A. An updated  email with a transportation schedule will be issued Sunday based on information we receive from the MTA, LIRR, and NICE Bus Service.  Car pooling is strongly recommended.

Q. What will the shuttle schedule be when campus re-opens?

A. We will continue to monitor MTA transit conditions and adjust our shuttle schedule as needed. We expect to have updated shuttle information as of Sunday.
