Join Together to Disarm Hate

News, Speeches and Correspondence, Message to the Adelphi Community

Dear Adelphi Community,

I am certain everyone in the Adelphi community joins me in mourning the loss of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling, as well as the lives of police officers Lorne Ahrens, Michael Krol, Michael J. Smith, Brent Thompson, and Patrick Zamarripa. We send our heartfelt condolences to their families and friends.

We grieve with them and join in solidarity with all Americans who reject hate and embrace love and compassion for our fellow citizens of the world. We must find a way to heal the wounds that racism creates and bridge the divide that pits one against another. As a university, we will be part of that healing and a plank in that bridge.

As an action step, and in the wake of the Orlando tragedy last month, the University is supporting an initiative by the Collaboration Project, the LGBTQ and Allies Committee, and GSA to have buses available to take interested members of the Adelphi community—students, staff, and faculty—to a march and rally in Washington, D.C. on August 13, 2016.  An email on logistics was shared with the campus on Friday. As Dr. Martin Luther King reminded us, “Hate cannot not drive out hate: only love can do that.”
