A Bridgespan research team sought answers to important questions about boards.

What does effective board performance look like? How can nonprofit boards become more effective? And, how can board effectiveness be measured? A Bridgespan research team sought answers to these questions. After reviewing literature on nonprofit governance and interviewing nearly two dozen practitioners, consultants, and analysts, the researchers found that “Oversight is necessary but not sufficient to define the work of an effective board. Leadership activities-providing strategic support and expertise, raising funds, building community support-that further the organization’s goals are also essential.”
