This month the Long Island Press will announce that Adelphi University, nominated in eight categories for the annual Bethpage Best of Long Island competition, will be declared a winner in three: Best College President, Best College Sports Coach and Best College Sports Program.

Adelphi President Christine M. Riordan, Ph.D., was named Best College President for a second time, also winning the honor in 2017. Since joining Adelphi in 2015, President Riordan has championed new programs and approaches that have improved the Adelphi experience and raised the University’s profile. Under her leadership, Adelphi has increased both student and faculty diversity as well as total enrollment, bucking national trends.

This is the first time Adelphi has won Best College Sports Program. The Panthers, with nearly 400 student-athletes and 23 intercollegiate teams, continually achieve the highest successes. A proud member of the Division II community of intercollegiate programs that value the scholar-athlete, the University competes in the prestigious Northeast-10 (NE10) Conference.

Women’s lacrosse Head Coach Pat McCabe, named Best College Sports Coach, took over the team in 2014 and has notched a record of 82-6. Under his leadership, the team has earned two national championships and appeared in another national championship final. The squad has also won three Northeast-10 championships, running the team’s total to seven in nine seasons.

“This is great recognition for Adelphi, our president, Coach McCabe and our amazing athletics programs,” said Joanna Templeton, associate vice president for brand strategy and University communications.“We’re grateful for those who supported Adelphi in all the categories where we were nominated. Long Island is our home and it’s gratifying to be recognized by our friends and neighbors.”

Adelphi was also nominated in the following categories: Best College or University, Public Garden, Theater Arts Center, Annual Event/Festival and Concert Venue.

A record 1.3 million votes were cast in all the categories. Winners will be formally introduced in a special “Best of Long Island” publication later this month.
