Judith Borten ’57, co-founder and board member of TransCen, and William Borten ’57, former Adelphi University Trustee and president and CEO of Atlantic Research Corporation, will receive honorary doctor of humane letters degrees from Adelphi University at its 111th Commencement on Monday, May 21, 2007. They will also join their 1957 classmates to celebrate their 50th reunion. The ceremony will begin at 10:00 AM in the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1255 Hempstead Turnpike, Uniondale, NY.

 Judith Borten ’57 has devoted her life to being an advocate for children and adults with disabilities and their families.  She is the

co-founder and board member of TransCen, a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the education and employment outcomes for people with disabilities by offering local employment programs and providing support for youth with disabilities in order for them to transition successfully from school to work and adult life.  Since its inception in 1986, more than 6,500 individuals with disabilities have benefited.

In addition to her work with TransCen, Mrs. Borten has served on the board of directors of the Ivymount School in Rockville, Maryland, a non-public school serving students with autism, developmental disabilities, communication disorders, learning disabilities, and health impairments. She previously served as an executive board member of the Learning Disabilities Association of Montgomery County, Maryland. She has also served on the advisory committee to the superintendent of special and alternative education, Montgomery County

Public Schools; the advisory committee to the office of special education, Maryland State Department of Education; the advisory committee to the office of special student services, Montgomery College; and the advisory committee, Montgomery County Public Schools department of staff development.

In recognition of her work for individuals with disabilities, Mrs. Borten has received the Montgomery County Volunteer Activist Award, the Montgomery County Public Schools Recognition Award, and Honorary Life Membership from the Maryland Congress of Parents and Teachers.

William Borten ’57 served as president and CEO of Atlantic Research Corporation from 1985 to 1989, a Virginia-based company involved in the design and manufacture of solid propellant rocket motors and electronic systems for military  and commercial applications. Prior to this role, Mr. Borten served as director of the finance, space, and electronics division at Fairchild Republic Corporation, a Maryland-based aerospace and aircraft manufacturing company. From 1959 to 1963, he was the comptroller at Avien, Inc., a New York-based avionics company.

Mr. Borten devotes an extraordinary amount of time to the community. Since 1989, he has been a member of the board of directors of TransCen, and has served as its chairman since 2004. His work with TransCen is driven by the belief that there is a job for everyone who wants one, regardless of the nature of a person’s disability, need for workplace support and accommodation, or economic circumstances.

Mr. Borten served on Adelphi’s Board of Trustees from 1980 to 1989, and was chairman of the finance committee from 1988 to 1989. He has been inducted into Adelphi’s Academy of Distinguised Alumni and Delta Mu Delta, Beta XI Chapter (National Honor Society in Business Administration). He has been honored by the National Business Society, and is a member of the Corridor of Distinguished Business Alumni.

Adelphi University will confirm more than 2,400 graduates at the associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels at its Commencement. Congressman John Lewis will deliver the Commencement Address. He will also receive an honorary degree, along with Donna Orender, president of the Women’s National Basketball Association; and Cecil Watkins ’75, M.A. ’86, governor and boys basketball chairman of New York Metropolitan Amateur Athletic Union and president and CEO of National Pro-Am City Leagues. Dr. Robert Moldwin ’80 will be presented with the Ruth S. Harley Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award.
