Marissa Abram ’08 was among six “Rising Stars in Nursing” honored by Modern Healthcare magazine in its January 2017 “Excellence in Nursing Awards” issue.

A clinical assistant professor at Adelphi’s College of Nursing and Public Health since 2015, Abram also has served since 2014 as a board member of Pulse Center for Patient Safety, Education and Advocacy in New York.

In the award nomination letter submitted to Modern Healthcare for consideration, Ilene Corina, Pulse president, said, “Marissa has a passion for patient safety and is just as passionate about educating her patients.”

She has gone “a step further,” Corina said, by cochairing community-based patient safety symposiums last year and in 2015. In addition, she organized a program at Adelphi fostering the message in nurse practitioner classes that “patient safety is a partnered relationship between the patient and the healthcare provider,” Corina added.

Abram, who is a Ph.D. candidate at the College and was a member of Adelphi’s 2015 class of 10 Under 10, earned a master’s degree from Stony Brook University in 2010. She was also a psychiatric nurse practitioner at Phoenix House.

“Rising Stars in Nursing” is one category in the magazine’s awards issue.
