New turf being installed for Motamed Field

Motamed Field is the home for Adelphi’s NCAA Division II women’s soccer, men’s soccer, women’s lacrosse, men’s lacrosse and field hockey programs. It also hosts Adelphi’s club sport programs, intramural athletics, physical education classes and University special events such as orientation. During the summer, young athletes train on it during their sports camps.

Any athletic field could use some TLC with such year-round use, and Motamed Field is receiving just that.

On Tuesday, November 20, Shaw Sports Turf arrived to install a new turf system. “We are excited to partner with one of the industry leaders to install this state-of-the-art surface on Motamed Field and provide the best there is to offer in safety and playability,” said Danny McCabe, director of athletics and campus recreation. “The new hybrid synthetic turf system will provide a safer surface for the athletes while maintaining the ability to host multiple sports throughout the year. ” He said the project also includes repairs to the roof of the underground parking garage.

Shaw has done similar projects for schools such as Vanderbilt University and Louisiana State University. The new field will feature lines for soccer, lacrosse and field hockey as well as Adelphi’s colors and “Adelphi Panthers” on the end line.

The project is expected to take up to five weeks and be completed in time for the beginning of the spring sports season in January 2019, said McCabe.

On June 14, 2010, the Board of Trustees of Adelphi University approved the naming of its athletic competition field as Motamed Field, in recognition of the generous support Thomas F. Motamed ’71, J.D., has given to the University and his leadership of its Board of Trustees.
