Heather Salerno to join faculty

Heather SalernoFormer Washington Post writer and award-winning journalist Heather Salerno will be teaching a new journalism course in the fall called “Arts and Entertainment Reporting.”  The course has students write news, features and columns in this specialized area. They will have the benefit in working with Salerno whose wide-ranging work has appeared in USA Today and Glamour magazine, among other publications.

John Drew – new professor looks at the future  of the digital world

John DrewJohn Drew will be joining the communications department as a full time faculty member this coming fall. Some students are already familiar with Professor Drew—he has been an adjunct in the program this year, teaching courses in New Media and Basic Media Production.

Drew comes into the department as the communications program continues to enhance its curriculum in digital media. Drew brings a rich expertise in the field both in the practical applications of new media, and in the study of social media.  For the fall semester, Drew is designing a new class entitled The Social Media, a theoretical course that closely examines the forces of social media and society.

Drew comes to Adelphi by way of the New School in New York, where he earned his doctorate. There he took on a leadership role in that school’s emerging online education program.

In an interview for The Front Page, John stated: “I am thrilled to have discovered a department that is genuinely excited about the future of media and about our own role in its development, both as educators and media practitioners.

“My only real expectation at this particular juncture is to connect with my students and my fellow colleagues and establish myself as someone that is eager to develop ideas, projects, new initiatives, basically anything that involves collaboration and new digital technologies.

“The sheer speed at which the new media landscape is shifting certainly makes the task of teaching about such socio- and technological changes challenging, but in many ways, the stakes also seem so much more rewarding,” he says.  “A student that successfully learns how to design and/or build websites or mobile applications, for example, has a lot going for them and indeed, will help determine the future of the field— that’s pretty inspiring stuff from a media educator’s standpoint.”

Tom Campbell takes post as new Technical Director

Thomas CampbellIf you’ve seen someone moving around Blodgett Hall, busily taking photographs, or working in classroom 108, plotting ways to convert the room into a television and film production studio, or involved in a host of other technical tasks, then you’ve met Tom Campbell, our new Technical Director.

Tom switched hats in January moving from the classroom where he was a longtime film adjunct to his new office in our technical center where he has come on board running. Tom’s job description is a half-mile long, only to be made longer by his own initiatives and unceasing energy. He comes to the job as the department is taking bold steps to expand facilities. He will be working with Jessi Sheehan, the assistant technical director, and Ann Terry, director of facilities, on a number of projects that include the construction of Studio 108 and the technical setup for the departmental Film Festival and Senior Dinner, both events coming in May.
