One Night of STEAM Power

When Adelphi students come together for the annual Music and Astronomy Night at Garden City’s Cradle of Aviation Museum, magic happens.

This year’s event was held on February 21 in the JetBlue Sky Theater Planetarium, integrating live music with otherworldly visuals. Using cutting-edge data visualization software, physics majors created eight original movies showcasing human exploration in space, which were screened with a mix of originals, covers and improvisational pieces performed by Adelphi student musicians. The collaboration encouraged students to view their disciplines in a new light, as part of a broader set of intellectual possibilities rather than one solitary field.

This isn’t Adelphi’s only STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) initiative—in 2016, the University opened a STEAM room (Harvey Hall Room 104), which is a DIY “community makerspace” that transforms the way students learn. The College of Arts and Sciences and the Ruth S. Ammon School of Education are currently developing a STEAM workshop for K-12 students.
