College of Nursing and Public Health student showcased their work at the 2014 conference.

For the 11th year, Adelphi University’s Research Conference—aka Research Day—took place as a springtime showcase that enables students to display their original research and share it with the academic community.

As Research Conference Committee co-chairs Kathleen Fiori, Ph.D., and Christopher Storm, Ph.D., noted in the program, the April event is “evidence of the University’s ongoing commitment to scholarship and creative works.”

They added that the conference’s purpose is to “offer both faculty and students a stage on which to display their scholarship…[and] inspire those who wish to engage in research and scholarly explorations in the future.”

The students’ research can be related to class projects, independent studies, seminars or research assistantships. And College of Nursing and Public Health students were greatly represented at the 2014 conference.

Erica Conde was the undergraduate winner in poster presentations with “How Can Pain Be Better Identified and Managed in Patients Who Cannot Self Report?” Faculty adviser: Deborah Ambrosio-Mawhirter.

Honorable menton for undergraduate oral presentations went to “Distraction Techniques and Pain Scores During Painful Medical Procedures in Young Children” (Dina Caldararo, Jillian Meli, Ashley Krug and Angela Rivera; faculty adviser: Yiyuan Sun).

Others among the nearly one dozen oral and poster presentations by College of Nursing and Public Health undergraduate and graduate students were: “Postpartum Depression” (Leah Harkin, Marylen Leon and Tiffany Riviere); “Should Health Educators ‘Make More Noise’ About Noise?” (Steven Siciliano); and “Clinical Data Interchange and Decision Support” (Elisabeth Counselman-Carpenter).

Submissions were encouraged from all disciplines, including nursing, the arts, the humanities and the sciences.

With an eye toward April 2015, Drs. Fiori and Storm encouraged Adelphi students to “begin thinking of questions that have not yet been asked, as we explore new areas of future research.”
