Martinez is researching gang-involved youth, social media and youth development programs.

Santiago Martinez Jr. received his bachelor’s degree in social work from York College and his master’s in social work from Fordham University.

He is a Licensed Master Social Worker with over 20 years of experience working with families of all age groups. His extensive experiences include: working as a case manager for HIV/AIDS patients in the Health and Hospitals Corporation in Brooklyn and Queens, New York; as an E.A.P. social worker for the New York City Mayor’s Office of Labor Relations; and is currently working as a certified school social worker providing mandated counseling for high school students with disabilities.

Martinez’s work with gang-involved youth during every phase of his career has prompted him to focus his research with that population. His research is focused on understanding the meaning that gang-involved youth give to social media relative to their environment. Findings are anticipated to assist social workers and mental health providers in broadening the current understanding, perceptions and experiences of gang-involved youth with their growing use of social media. This insight will further bolster and clarify our current assessment of the challenges that social workers have with the prevention, intervention and suppression of youth gang recruitment.

His research interests include gang-involved youth, social media and youth development programs. He also has an interest in teaching social work practice with individuals and groups at the bachelor’s and master’s level.
