Despite being seasoned couples therapists, many practitioners find themselves ‘over their heads’ when it comes to treating sexual problems among their patients. This presentation is for advanced couple’s psychotherapists who wish to incorporate more specific approaches to dealing with sexual issues in their practice. Participants will also gain greater insight into sexuality as it pertains to clinical practice with couples.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will demonstrate greater desensitization to sexual language and sexual situations as well as gain the skill to be at ease talking and counseling couples about the sexual aspects of their relationship.
- Describe and dispute common sexual myths and unrealistic expectations about sexual response, arousal and overall sexual behavior among couples.
- Recognize gender differences, the role of sexual orientation and gender identity and their impact on the functioning of same and opposite gender couples.
- Identify and become more comfortable with their own sexual values, biases and countertransferential reactions and understand how these effect the treatment.
- Gain the ability to create basic therapeutic interventions around common sexual issues and dysfunctions as they present in couples therapy.
- Practice safe therapeutic boundaries when dealing with sexual issues in the clinical setting.
Cynthia Pizzulli, LCSW, Ph.D., is a seasoned individual, couples and family psychotherapist. She is certified as a sex therapist by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT). She is an adjunct professor at SUNY Stony Brook School of Social Welfare. In addition to having a Ph.D. from New York University, Dr. Pizzulli is Board Certified by the American Board of Examiners in Clinical Social Work (BCD).
An experienced lecturer, Dr. Pizzulli has presented workshops and lectures on clinical practice issues, sexuality and gender identity, managing relationships, eating disorders, personality disorders, and parenting adolescents. Her work has been featured in The New York Times, Newsday, and on several media outlets including, HBO, Lifetime, and Oxygen.
This program has been approved for CEU credits by the New York State Education Department’s State Board for Social Work. Adelphi University School of Social Work is an approved provider of continuing education for licensed social workers #0032. New York State Office of the Professions (NYSED) regulations require that participants must be present for the entire approved educational activity in order to receive a certificate for continuing education credits. There is no accommodation in the State regulations for late arrival, late return from lunch or breaks, or early departure. At present, there is no procedure for granting partial credit for approved continuing education events.
