The Smalley Family Endowment for Italian Language Studies

Patrick S. Smalley ’86 was raised in a multi-generational Italian-American family. At home, his daily life was infused with the wonderful sounds of the Italian language and the richness of Italian culture, cuisine, music, literature and art. The time he spent traveling in Italy only furthered his love for its amazing history and influence on today’s worlds of fashion, design, food, and art. Moreover, he is proud to see that the Italian economy remains a world leader, and hopes that Adelphi graduates will be equipped to pursue jobs and experiences in the global marketplace.

All of this inspired him to establish an endowed scholarship in honor of his family, for the purpose of encouraging students to explore, master and enjoy the Italian language and Italian culture and the arts. It is his intent to allow Adelphi students to complement their studies, enrich their personal lives, and acquire practical skills that can be applied to professional objectives and that will shape lifelong memories.

The Smalley Family Endowment for Italian Language Studies was established in 2013 to honor the memory of Trustee Smalley’s great-grandparents (Ferraro, Ciardulli), his grandparents (Langione), and his parents (Smalley). This endowment provides scholarships to undergraduate students pursuing a minor (or major when it is available) in Italian language. Moreover, eligible undergraduate students who minor (or major) in Italian and wish to study abroad in Italy may apply the scholarship funds to fees related to their study abroad experience.

Eligible students will have demonstrated financial need, as documented by the Office of Student Financial Services and will have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0 or higher and will remain in good academic standing. Service learning and international studies are a major component of Adelphi’s vision for global education and the Smalley family is pleased to help enrich student academic and cultural experiences as they explore other cultures and truly become global citizens.
