As director of freshman admissions, Stephanie Espina has touched the lives of the many high school students and their families who visit, attend open houses and Accepted Student Days, and come to her for advisement at Adelphi.

She was recently recognized for her accomplishments and mentorship by ATHENA International, which presented her with the 2019 ATHENA Young Professional Leadership Award.

Founded in 1982, ATHENA International is a nonprofit organization that develops, supports and honors women leaders, inspires them to reach their full potential and strives to create balance in leadership worldwide. The organization works with local host organizations to recognize award recipients in more than 500 communities.

“What a humbling experience to be recognized in the company of so many inspirational women,” Espina recalled. “I dedicated the award to all of the great mentors in my life and charged the audience with paying it forward as a mentor. The ATHENA organization is an impressive one, and I’m so grateful to be in the company of Long Island’s top businesswomen,” she said, adding that she is following in the footsteps of Kristen Capezza, M.B.A. ’12, vice president for enrollment management, who won the award in 2017.

A recipient of the Adelphi University Spirit Award for student mentoring, Espina is active in leadership and volunteer roles in the community, including serving as president-elect of the New York State Association for College Admission Counseling.
