Ms. Hamlin discusses her new role advocating for low-income Brooklyn residents, especially Superstorm Sandy survivors.

Adelphi Trustee Chantal Hamlin ’07 was recently named interim executive director of Brooklyn Jubilee, where she has been working since December 2012. She shared thoughts about her new role. Do you have career—or other—news to share? Let us know

Why did you first start working at Brooklyn Jubilee?

Brooklyn Jubilee’s mission was initially attractive to me because it is public service with a Christian vision.

What have you most enjoyed about working there?

I’ve enjoyed the many ways we’ve been able to meet the practical needs of residents of the neighborhoods where we offer our services. I’ve enjoyed how we’ve been able to come alongside clients who have nowhere else to turn and help them obtain better outcomes than they could have on their own. I’ve enjoyed speaking up on behalf of others and really advocating for people and their health and nutrition—in court, out of court, and even through healthy meals.

What is the scope of Brooklyn Jubilee’s work post Superstorm Sandy?

The Brooklyn Jubilee staff has provided face-to-face legal assistance to more than 500 Sandy survivor families and helped Sandy survivor families save or recover more than $205,000.

What are you most looking forward to about being interim executive director?

I’m excited to help Brooklyn Jubilee achieve its mission of working to restore communities by providing access to integrated legal, health and nutrition services for low-income Brooklyn residents through community partnerships. I’m happy to continue our work in many of the neighborhoods in Brooklyn affected by Superstorm Sandy—Coney Island, Canarsie and Sheepshead Bay. I’m also excited to see our health and nutrition services expand.
